Femininity as Image

2019

Femininity as Image is a performance-based photography project which depicts ambiguous stereotypes in relation to the female body.

Through the use of the medium, the artist becomes both the objectifier and the object or the photographer and the “ideal woman” photographed. Although the series contains only self-portraits, the work is not an autobiographical piece, but rather a discussion and visual comparison between the personal and societal understanding of femininity.

The duality of the work is intentional. Its dynamic aims to draw attention to the prevalence of the male gaze in photography, and, more broadly: to use the photographer’s practice as a way to depict the parallels between dream, desire, and illusion.

By invoking intersubjectivity and body objectification, the artist encourages the viewer to think with these works, rather than about them.
